These aren't random recommendations. Each of our staff plays, tours, records, and collects instruments — and each maintains their own curated selection of pieces they've personally vetted. When someone here flags something as a find, there's real experience behind it.
Dave started in music retail in 1989 and opened Gear Music in 1996. That's thirty-five years of knowing which instruments hold their value, which ones play better than their price suggests, and which ones you'll regret passing on. His background is keyboards and synths, with a guitar obsession that's grown steadily since. When Dave sets something aside, it's usually because he'd keep it himself if he could.
Scott has been drumming for over forty ears and has spent the last twenty seven at Gear Music — first as a drum instructor, now as manager. He tours regularly with Fiddlestix and also has been a member of the legendary Beat Heathens for over 30 years. He collects drum kits, snares, and too many guitars (Fender Telecasters...)!! Scott loves talking vintage guitars and old music and of course gear!!!
Andrew has spent over twenty five years as a touring and session guitarist — Sarah Slean, Wild Strawberries, Danny Michel, Blue Coupe. He has also developed presets for BOSS and Roland products, which means he's thought harder about signal chains and effects than most people ever will. His specialty is guitars, amps, and pedals, and his picks reflect a professional's understanding of what actually sounds right in a mix. Andrew's the person you want vetting an effects board or a vintage amp.
Tim plays guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, percussion, and sings — he's been teaching music for over twenty years and recording and producing on top of that. His band The Redhill Valleys keeps him active as a songwriter and lead guitarist. What that breadth means in practice is that he can assess almost any instrument with a player's understanding, not just a salesperson's. His engineering background means he also evaluates gear the way a studio hears it.
